As of January 20, supermarket prices for sugar in Ukraine were about UAH10.5 per kilogram and about UAH11 per kilogram at smaller retailers. According to the head of Ukrainian association of sugar producers Ukrsakhar, over the past month wholesale prices have risen steeply from UAH5,500 per ton to UAH7,500 per ton, a 36% increase.

Wages in arrears in Ukraine declined in December 2009 by 10.2% from UAH1.641 bn on December 1, 2009 to UAH1.473 bn on January 1, 2010, according to Ukraine’s State Statistics Committee. During 2009 wage arrears rose by 23.9% in nominal terms from UAH1.189 bn to UAH1.473 bn.

Real wages in Ukraine declined by 9.2% in real terms in 2009, according to the State Statistics Committee. Average wages rose sharply towards year-end, ahead of the presidential elections, with the end of December number reaching UAH2,233 per month, up by 14.2% on the month.

Ukraine’s state budget in 2009 ran a deficit of UAH19,865.6 mn, 37% lower than the planned deficit of UAH31,563 mn, said the Finance Ministry.
